Gothia Cup started in 1975 with 275 participating teams.From there it has gone on to become the world's largest football tournament. Last year it had more than 40,000 players from 1600 teams and 80 nations. Spanning one week in July each year, the event becomes the dominant event in Gothenburg, with (as of 2006) 4,320 games played on 91 fields, and 300,000 visitors to the centre on Heden. It encompasses various Age-Categories for Boys and Girls, from the U-11 to U-18's . The Tournament is a 11 a side tournament.
The opening ceremony is a spectacle to be witnessed, with fireworks, artists and performers from all around the world ,performing at the huge Ullevi Stadium.
Gothenburg offers plenty for sightseeing, be it Liseberg which is one of the most visited amusement parks in Scandinavia and amongst the top 10 amusement parks in the world , or Botanical Gardens which are a delight to nature lovers.
